Choosing a web design agency in Vellore or Bangalore: nine questions that separate a studio from a reseller
Looking for a web design and development agency in Vellore, Chennai or Bangalore? Nine questions to ask before you sign, what the answers tell you, and how a small design-engineering studio in Tamil Nadu answers them.

TL;DR · Key takeaways
- Ask who will actually design and code your site. If the person on the sales call never touches the work, you are buying a reseller, not a studio.
- Ask for the measured numbers of their last three launches: Lighthouse, Core Web Vitals and load time on a real phone. Screenshots of designs are not evidence.
- Make sure you own the domain, the hosting account, the code and the content on day one. Ownership is the difference between a supplier and a landlord.
- A redesign without a redirect map loses rankings. Ask how they migrate SEO before you ask about colours.
Every city has a hundred companies that will “make you a website”. Vellore has them, Chennai and Bangalore have more, and most of them look identical from the outside: a portfolio of screenshots, a list of technologies, a few logos. That makes choosing feel like a coin toss.
It doesn’t have to be. The questions below are the ones I would ask if I were buying a site, and they work whether the agency is around the corner from you in Vellore or across the country. They also apply to us, so I’ve answered each one honestly for Crayont at the end.
1. Who will actually do the work?
This is the question that sorts the market. Many agencies are sales fronts: the person you meet closes the deal and hands the project to a freelancer or a template shop you never talk to. The result is a site nobody feels responsible for.
Ask directly: who designs it, who writes the code, and will I speak to them? A good answer names people. A vague answer (“our team”) is a warning.
2. What did your last three sites measure?
Design is opinion; performance is a number. Ask for the last three launches and their measured results: Lighthouse scores, Core Web Vitals from the field, and a load time on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data.
An agency that measures will have these numbers to hand and will show you the live sites, not slides. If they can’t, they don’t measure, and your site will be slow the way most sites are slow. The Core Web Vitals checklist explains what the numbers mean and where the limits are.
3. What will I own on day one?
You should own the domain (registered in your name, in your account), the hosting account, the source code and the content. Many businesses in India discover at renewal time that the agency owns the domain and the site is hosted on the agency’s account, which turns a supplier into a landlord.
Ask for a written answer. “You own everything, here is how the accounts are set up” is the only acceptable one.
4. How do you handle SEO during a redesign?
If you already rank for anything, a redesign can destroy it in an afternoon. Changed URLs without redirects, dropped page titles, deleted pages that had backlinks: all common, all avoidable.
Ask how they build the redirect map, what they do with your existing metadata and whether they check Search Console after launch. We wrote up our own method in the redirect-map checklist. Any serious agency has an equivalent.
5. What happens after launch?
A site is not finished at launch; it is finished when it has been measured in the field and fixed. Ask about the warranty period, how bugs are reported and what a monthly care retainer includes and costs. Ask who answers the phone in month six.
6. Which stack, and why this one for me?
The honest answer depends on your business. A marketing site with a small team that edits copy occasionally, a content site with daily publishing and an application with logins are three different problems. If the agency gives every client the same platform, they are selling what they know, not what you need. Our own view on Astro, Webflow and WordPress is here, including the cases where we would not pick our default.
7. Can I see a written spec before design starts?
A spec is a short document: the pages or features, the timeline, the fixed price, and the tolerances the site must meet (load time, accessibility, SEO basics). It protects both sides. Without it, “we thought that was included” becomes the most expensive sentence of the project.
8. Do you test on real phones?
Most of your visitors in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are on Android phones on mobile data, not on a designer’s laptop. Ask which devices they test on and whether you’ll get a build link to try on your own phone during the project, not only at the end.
9. How do you price?
Hourly billing rewards slow work. A fixed price against a written spec rewards clear scope. Ask which one you are getting, and what happens when you ask for something outside the spec (a good answer is a short written change note with a price, not an argument at invoice time).
Local or remote?
Being in the same city is worth less than it used to be. A studio in Vellore can serve a company in Bangalore or Chennai with the same weekly build links, the same calls and the same time zone, and the work is judged on the same numbers. What matters is responsiveness and clarity, not the commute. If you want a face-to-face meeting, Vellore to Bangalore is a morning’s drive, and we do it when it helps.
How Crayont answers these
- Who does the work: the people who design your interface also write its code, front-end to back-end. There is no account manager between you and us.
- Numbers: every project on our work page links to the live site and the numbers it shipped with, measured on the day.
- Ownership: yours, from day one. Domain, hosting, code, content.
- SEO: every redesign includes a redirect map, metadata and structured data, and a Search Console check after launch.
- After launch: a fix window on every project, and a monthly care retainer if you want us on call.
- Stack: Astro by default for speed and ownership, Webflow when a marketing team wants full visual control, and a proper application stack for web apps.
- Spec and pricing: written spec first, fixed price against it, change notes for anything outside it.
- Devices: mid-range Android and iPhone, on mobile data, with a build link you can open on your own phone every week.

FAQ · Questions people ask
- Does Crayont work with businesses outside Vellore?
- Yes. The studio is based in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, and most projects are with clients in Chennai, Bangalore and abroad. Everything runs remotely on IST hours, with calls scheduled around your time zone.
- How much does a website cost in Vellore or Bangalore?
- It depends on scope, not location. A small business site, a full redesign with SEO migration and a web application are three different projects. We quote a fixed price after a written spec, so the number you sign is the number you pay.
- How long does a website take?
- A focused marketing site usually ships in a few weeks once content is ready. A redesign with an SEO migration or a web app takes longer, and the timeline is written into the spec before design starts.
